“i tell you, God’s honest truth, john-o, the drunker i get, the more reasonable the most un-fuckin'-reasonable things seem to me.”
wanted to love this but just couldn’t, quite unfortunate in how that turns out.
has so much going for it. a stellar cast comprised of sam rockwell, jason isaacs, kelly reilly, william h. macy and jeffrey wright. a compelling story as well, or at least the bones of one. and it’s mostly well acted too. rockwell is incredible, i’d place him in my personal top five probably. wright makes the most of his minutes and i liked his character. isaacs is menacing in his limited screen time as well, but that’s where the gamut of problems begins.
the story is not structured strongly enough for it to make sense. there’s too much going on and at the same time there’s not enough going on. it’s frustrating to try to understand everything that’s going on because the story diverges into so many different ways that it never lets any moment breathe. even the beginning isn’t as impactful as it should be because it’s so brushed over as the story continues on.
the biggest sin in the movie is that it expects you to know how small town america exists, and to understand the nuances that come with existing in and around those communities. the delivery of the line about everyone knowing everyone else’s sins comes too late to be impactful.
also didn’t love the ending. it feels so anticlimactic and like a waste of john’s character. very unfortunate.
