Find it really hard to rate these old feature length movies, sure for the time period they were probably very impressive.. but the subject matter is so far-removed from today’s social zeitgeist and world-view it’s kinda intolerable. This is just a less racist Birth of a Nation and with less influence on filmmaking in general. Well I guess it’s called The First Hollywood Movie, so it’s a bit influential.
I mean there’s no reason to watch this. There’s nothing that’s that interesting except the fact that the costumes are well made and it’s pretty impressive for something almost 120 years old. The editing is so bad it’s hard to get through and I still can’t understand why they used those god awful monochrome colors - they’re so bad, and I wished they just kept them in black & white.
