On January 14, 1931, around 8 p.m., a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which lasted three minutes and 10 seconds, caused a tragedy in the city of Oaxaca that until now has no comparison. Until now, perhaps due to the limitations of those years, there is no record of a specific number of victims or affected buildings.
Only versions of 10 thousand deaths are known from references of those who survived the great earthquake that had its epicenter in Loxicha. The tragedy also caused famine, cholera and misery, as well as the consequent migration of many Oaxacans to different cities in the country, especially to the Federal District.
The few known images of the tragedy were filmed by Sergei M. Eisenstein. Coincidentally, Eisenstein and his team were filming ¡Que viva México! in the region so they were able to make this short documentary called “The disaster in Oaxaca.”
The short documentary film can tell us that these types of disasters wiped out both the rich and the poor, even destroying the house of God.
