Freaking jump scare. No one warned me about the Lynchian opening and the Tarkovsky-style long shots, shot in low budget misfortune, Here suffers from raw foggy footage (lacking color grading) and cheap audio capture (microphone from Temu). Manufactured as a film school project extremist, there’s no personal input coming from Ho Tzu Nyen, only utilising popular-ready techniques to fuel the progress inside Island Hospital. Interview-like conversations leave the narrative to dry, almost presented as a slow documentary but interesting at times, although it gets quite repetitive. All aspects of cinema was nailed: blocking, composition, framework, pacing; sadly the script was prosaic and insipid; performances were too clement to be felt (no criminal infliction); tiresome mental facility drama indeed. Very frequently a same shot is brought up again, for a couple of times, I understand its effect, however it becomes very remote, then stiff to look at. Silent film caption usage in the mute scenes paid a tribute maybe? The lack of financial resources could have subjugated this film’s ambitious vision, arthouse friendly but poorly executed.
