I couldn't get a hold of this movie. I couldn't find this movie of promising quality. Hence, I think that's why this movie is not rated as highly as it should be. I found two versions of this movie online. One that is two hours long with Russian intertitles, and the other one—with much worse quality, of course—that is one and a half hours long (with English intertitles). So, I decided to go with the Russian version. I am not fluent in Russian myself. It is tedious to get the right translations for the movie. But I managed to finish this movie. About the movie:
I think Robert Wiene's style of making silent movies is awesome. I'm not fond of this one. Other than the quality of this movie, which I have found online, which would make it much worse than it should be, the execution of this movie is atrocious. Yes, I get it. The idea of a German Expressionist version of Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is excellent. Not to mention Wiene's Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which, alongside the impact of this movie in modern horror films, is very amusing. I love Crime and Punishment, and I love Dostoevsky's works. I wouldn't go into further detail, since I'm pretty sure I didn't understand almost half of the movie. I wouldn't give it a rewatch either, unless there is a better translation (and quality) of this movie.
