The feminine touch of in the screenplay and the directing shows in this early film. The conflict between institutions of womanhood versus the women who are expected to live and uphold that standard seeps through every facet of the film. The antiquated rules of society brush up against the freedom young women want but are unfortunately only able to be granted by men. It’s such an interesting portrait of the time that feels oddly counter-culture to its time in a way that makes me want to compare it to, say, the edgier 60s and 70s films about high school teens
