Bittersweet. That's the word for this film. There are probably better versions of this type of story out there, and I'm sure the whole melodrama and weepy nature of the film surely won't work for everyone, but I'm a softie so it generally worked. But this is film has Margaret Sullavan, and it's her last film performance a decade before her tragic death. She's the best part in pretty much every film she's in, and she's just heartbreakingly good here. The film is bittersweet on its own, but the context of Sullavan elevates that feeling to another level. I'm glad I've watched all 16 movies in her filmography, and it feels right to have saved this one for last.
