this is a documentary about the 1981 french open
spectacularly naturalistic documentary filmmaking. just like any global sport, i cannot imagine that tennis today is nearly as raw or non-corporatized as it’s depicted here (or even comes close). by about the 70 minute mark, you start to feel the length and weight of this movie, which is exhausting and lasts for the remainder of the runtime but it parallels the journey the players go on masterfully, to the point that i wanted to cheer, revel, and celebrate with the winners as they lifted the trophy.
