in hell does a nice job in bringing the overdramatized values that are hong kong films set in a world of prison corruption. yet hardly anything new and fresh and exciting to come out of this film, its kind of like repeated material. with the ending feeling very pale.
there is one tiny aspect that is new and it was giving a tiny bit of deep character development. involving the cultural belief of reincarnation and how changes Van Damme’s character and how he evolves to survive this brutal and unfair environment.
the fights aren’t as engaging as i would like them to be but i get that they were trying to create a gritty and grim atmosphere.
there are a lot of unintentionally funny things in this film though that help with my enjoyment. like how diverse the people this prison are, people of all sorts of races are for some reason in this prison in russia. then there’s random man that we barely know in the movie that narrates his philosophy for whatever reason.
i swear if van damme knew martial arts in this film, this would’ve been a near masterpiece.
