Really sweet movie about forgiveness, grief and resilience. Good performances by the main cast Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Lopez, who all brought a lot of depth and complexity to an otherwise linear and predictable storyline. The pacing was slow by general movie standards but I think it worked for the kind of slow-moving, middle-of-nowhere small-town milieu the movie was going for. I appreciated the allegory of the bear being a manifestation of Einar’s tortured psyche and grief, and how he slowly learnt to live in the “now”. I think the movie gets most of its merits from the all-star cast who sold the complexities of abuse, trauma and “getting by” with what you have.
