until now i couldn't remember why i didn’t think back on this film as favourably as the other marx brothers films and it almost immediately reminded me that it was because of the overly long and boring song and dance numbers that don’t involve anyone in the main plot and aren’t really related to the film in any way whatsoever. this is just a product of this film being an early talkie so that sort of thing would just randomly happen in these films only really to show off. i didn’t find it as egregious this go around as i did the first time but it still throws the pace off quite a bit. harpo is definitely my favourite in this one he has so many fantastic bits here. the ‘viaduct/why a duck’ bit between groucho and chico is great too. all in all a lot better than i remembered it being but still suffers slightly from being a product of its time in relation to the pacing issues.
