Director- Anurag Kashyap. This is the nineteenth film I have seen of his and like the majority of his films, this left me disappointed and wanting more. The intro of the film is quite gripping and sets a great tone for the film. It could have been followed by a much better film. The monologue was the reason why I decided to watch the film. The film has a rushed start but around the middle it gets way better pacing. The film post the kid and his father dying is better pacing vise and builds up intrigue. It goes nowhere though. The ending with the duo of k k menon and the protagonist dying is nonsensical and in no way satisfying. It reminded of some other films of Kashyap that too get too grand for him to end leading him to end them abruptly and in an unsatisfactory manner. The film suffers from having too good a side character in K K Menon and a protagonist that can't act half as good as Menon. I thought the protagonist will die of alcohol poisoning or substance overdose the way he was going. Never had I thought he will grow a pair only to be cut short. He didn't even shoot Abhijit (from CID) and the actress playing his sister, while he stumbled to get home. He could have made sure they died in hindsight so his death could actually serve a good purpose rather than ending random people's lives over a misunderstanding. The music of the film is phenomenal, especially aarambh. The acting of Piyush Mishra is great too.K K Menon's monologues are great due to his charisma and from them one can understand his reasons for taking such steps, well. It would have been better to explore the reasons in more depth though. It feels rushed and half baked and also jumbled with his death. He is a much better character to explore than the protagonist. We are not told about how the ideologies of K K Menon and Abhijit from CID is different. This leads the antagonist to appear half baked and his sister to appear more rounded instead. The film has some violent scenes shot voyeuristically but they are random and infrequent. Overall, another miss by Kashyap and again I am reminded of why finding the right mentor is important. Kashyap 's career's parallels can be drawn with his mentor, RGV and the way they make films too can be said to be similar. This film reminds me a lot of Satya. It is way better written though. Also the film reminded me of Aavesham due to school bullying and local support.
