Ugh this one got me. It’s not good and, to be clear, it suffers deeply from the rampant juvenile misogyny of this time’s anime. And yet… this one does something. I actually think, of all these I’ve watched, this has been the most convincing of what it could be. Like what would this have looked like in Kawajiri’s hands? The Freemen ova’s, which this one made clear to me, basically uses women in the James Bond tradition.
The female bad, Nina Heaven, is a prime example of anime sleeze which could be worthwhile, ie have some arguable artistic merit. Here, it doesn’t, but conceptually, a sexual battle of wills and psychosexual battlelust is not an uninteresting idea. Even a giant framed image of Crying Freemen, literally, being the only true source of sexual arrousal is, yes creepy, but still interesting in a psychotic way.
With a little more patience and care, this might have been a real winner. I don’t think this is good, but it’s my favourite yet of the series. And also, even though I don’t think it’s good, I think this would be an appreciated watch for vintage anime enthusiasts.
