Clearly taking a page from Ponting's The Great White Silence, one of the most startling pieces of documentary film I've seen, The Epic of Everest very much is an incredible spectacle in its own right. The first half's title cards are prone to your typical English explorers' observations of "foreigners", but the quality of the footage makes up for its 1920s-isms. The second half of the journey to the summit is just majestic to witness. There's something about seeing the glow of nature through nitrate film that I can't begin to explain, it's just mesmerizing.
