Where the sweet hell has this gem been hiding for so long? An American film based on a novel by Erich Maria Remarque (All Quiet on the Western Front) made before our entry into WW2 about German and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis and repeatedly being deported between other European countries. As someone who is fascinated in that era of history, alongside the fact that this movie was screened at the White House with FDR in attendance, the fact this movie exists and is forgotten is mindboggling. It stars two of my favorite actors of the era, Fredric March and Margaret Sullavan, and the rest of the cast is also quite fantastic, particularly Glenn Ford and the brief appearances of Erich von Stroheim. The film also looks really darn good with William H. Daniels' cinematography and William Cameron Menzies' production design. Again, I'm shocked this movie exists and that it is so neglected. Go seek it out.
