i find it hard to believe that the previous excellent films build up to a stunning anticlimax of a finale. the premise is there but the execution of it falls flat. there’s a common saying in filmmaking: “show, don’t tell”, i needed this film to show us more of lio being this creepy stalker and not just drop us in his room full of pictures of shiki and voice recordings to say “hey this dude is a stalker”. this really impacted the way i saw lio as a character because to me he was just this crazy mustache-twirler when he really could’ve been so much more. and this film really could’ve been like 20 minutes shorter because they were dragging out a lot.
the main thing i really disliked was how they keep on shoving this message of “murder bad” to your face. like if you’re gonna hammer down a message to the viewer, at least make it more profound.
