Funny story. A long time ago, my Mom told me that she had a bit role in a short film when she was very young. I remember her showing clips from the film but I never watched it in it's entirety. Today, I asked her what the film was titled and she told me it was
Split Cherry Tree.
I do a little research and am amazed. Not only was this a professionally-made short film (I always believed it to be a college film or something) but it turns out it was nominated for Best Live Action Short at the Oscars. I'm confused why she never told me this, because she's known all this time.
I go further down the rabbit hole and look at who made the film. Andrey Konchalovskiy directed the film. He might not be too well known for his directing career, but his writing credits might ring a bell:
Andrei Rublev and
Ivan's Childhood (uncredited). I'm like "Mom, this man who directed you wrote 2 of the greatest movies ever made. And you never told me why?"
I watch the film and the name "Edward Lachman" appears next to cinematographer credit. I go "Mom, the cinematographer for this short film went on to get Oscar-Nominated for the films
Carol and
Far From Heaven. This is getting more and more insane."
For those of you who want to watch the film,
click right here. In a scene where the kids are spying in on the father and the teacher, who are looking through a microscope, a little girl walks out of the room across from it (Twice actually, at 19:06 and 20:20. They used 2 different takes at 2 separate times). When the son is pushed down some stairs (21:22), the kids stare down at him. The girl second from the right. That little girl grew up to be my Mother.
