I just finished reading Daniel Kehlmann's novel The Director the other day, a fictionalized examination of G.W. Pabst's time and work in Nazi Germany (good book, by the way), and I figured I'd watch basically the only film from that era that is readily available. This is one of the rare pieces of Germany cinema during the Nazi era that is available on blu-ray by Kino Lorber and restored by the Murnau Stiftung, and this disc description certainly pushes against the idea this is a propaganda film and Pabst was pushing a subversive message past Goebbels. Watching this for myself, you can definitely see the arguments for and against this idea to a confusing degree.
