Hirata's selfishness earned us this documentary. A documentary about a man who wanted to live a lot more. Society has changed in ways that would surprise Hirata if he was alive or somehow could see how it is. Kore-eda was absolutely brave to film and to tell the story the way he did was absolutely worth it. He seemed like someone who knew what he wanted and would go for it, despite going through so much pain, he lived everyday as though it was his first when he could.

August Without Him really made me feel like I was losing such an intimate person in my life, and it did so without forcing me to feel any particular emotions. It flowed naturally, and before I knew it, I had grown attached to Hirata. My tears fell, and I whimpered for the last 10 minutes.
