I wonder why Wolfcop got all the attention as /the werewolf movie of 2014/ when Late Phases existed. This movie boasts of EXCELLENT performances from everyone. It's a slow burn detective thriller as much as it is a werewolf horror movie, and I appreciate it going with a subtle dark humour route instead of straight up horror-comedy. It's paced deliberately slow but I didn't really got bored whatsoever as the ensemble consisting of Nick Damici, Ethan Embry and Tom Noonan kept things moving in an interesting and rather intriguing way. The last 20 mins takes us to the much anticipated transformation scene which was done in a single long, roving take fashion and was pulled off rather well if I'm being honest. The creature(s) were quite ugly though well I guess that's what they were going for but the movie's "low budgeted-ness" was not apparent until we see the werewolves. Some of the subplots felt unfinished, that's where I think the movie could have improved upon. The cause of the strain in the father and son relationship could have been explored a little bit more. I'm surprised that I enjoyed the parts without the werewolves equally as the parts where Damici went face to face with them, and I think that's what makes Late Phases stand out from other monster movies. It's been a while since we had a decent werewolf movie but Late Phases is well worth the wait.
