❝They say 'I' is about being smart. 'I' is about being fast... But for me, 'I' is simply about love.❞

I used to like I when I was younger, but on rewatch it's got so many glaring issues that I can't believe I glossed over. For one, the sheer amount of homophobia and transphobia is absolutely disgusting, and I can't believe Shankar and the entire cast involved thought this was OK. And even after all that the actual plot is extremely shallow and poorly written, with some genuinely cringe-inducing dialogue. Vikram has proven to be a great actor, and he did try his best here, but there's only so much one can do with the terrible script. Amy Jackson doesn't have an acting bone in her body, not to mention she's not even Indian; I'm 1000% sure she was picked because she was popular and beautiful. The rest of the cast isn't very good, either, with the exception of Santhanam, whose comedic timing and delivery back then was brilliant. The few redeeming qualities of this film are that there are some genuinely stunning scenes, and the songs by A. R. Rahman are really good. Overall, though, I don't think I'll be rewatching I any time soon, and I can see why my mum's hated it since its release.
