Firstly, I chose to watch this film because of the premise. It’s basically a buddy cop movie where the buddies are a father and son who can’t stand each other. On top of that, it’s a French-language Canadian film - which peaked my interest. I’ve seen plenty of Hollywood movies in this genre and it definitely deserves a new perspective.
The film opens up with the scene shown in the trailer above, which sets up the father-son duo to set off on a mission to save their team member, who was taken hostage by a biker gang. They do so by heading off into the woods for some father-son bonding, which is just a cover-up to get the biker gang’s lawyer, who’s there on an excursion to repair the broken relationship with his own son, to betray his gang leader boss and disclose the location of the hostage cop. If that doesn’t sound completely ridiculous enough, the characters that are encountered at the therapy camp are even more off the wall.
To my amazement - I bought the entire thing. It was absolutely hilarious! The dialogue was witty, fast-paced, and full of sarcasm. The story was engaging and moved along steadily enough to maintain the action and comedy. What made this film stellar however was the dynamic between the father and son - which is major credit to the actors: Michel Côté and Louis-José Houde. On top of that, the film felt satisfying - it was well written, it had a good amount of LPMs (Laughs Per Minute), and looked pretty good too. As with a lot of foreign or low-budget films, I sometimes feel they lack that shine and polish of Hollywood films, but Father and Guns was not only well shot but well lit.
In summary, Father and Guns hit the mark!
