Charles Grodin and Steve Martin’s conversations outdo all the silly gags, but The Lonely Guy’s sad sack subject matter turns out to be a great mine for comedy. Guys who fetishize their own sadness are, honestly, pretty silly and so can their views on dating, but instead of being a proto-500 Days of Summer, Lonely Guy pushes it to wacky comedic extremes. Feels more akin to a cartoony Bob Hope comedy than an actual treatise on dating and loneliness.
Some god-tier Grodin stuff here, but what else would you expect?
