I was promised a full documentary on the story of Citizen Kane’s development but instead got only 30 minutes tops. The other 80 minutes is boring, slow, and takes way too much time to get to where it’s going. The selection of interviewees, and especially the narrator, aren’t particularly interesting or engaging to listen to, and it suffers the biggest crime a documentary could have (in my humble opinion): if I keep asking myself “what do I learn from this film that I couldn’t learn from a book on the same subject?”, then that is not a good sign. Aside from the actual clips from different films and stage productions, the answer is not much.
