Very much a propaganda film to stir US sympathies to France near the beginning of our entry into World War II, and it's effective enough at that task. Crawford and Wayne are an odd pairing, possibly purposefully? I'm not entirely sure myself, but I still like their presence. The story is fairly standard, but the themes of resilience against the Nazis and seeing your fellow countrymen surrender themselves to fascism do still provoke strong emotions in this current moment. Needless to say, it's no Mrs. Miniver.
