It wasn’t awful, but I didn’t like it very much.
Honestly I found the plot uninteresting, it wasn’t necessarily the plot itself, but the way it was executed. The whole thing is very melodramatic and camp, which I love, but nothing was keeping me on the edge of my seat. Every "twist” was predictable, and I feel like the ending made sense, but was too obvious. I don’t think that every movie has to be full of twist and suspense to be good, but when the beginning of the movie sets it up like there is going to be a bunch of plot twist, and those fall flat, that’s when it becomes boring.
Also the acting was very bland, besides Joan Crawford’s performance of course. She really carries this whole movie, and if she wasn’t in this movie, it would be ten times worse. I think that shows how the movie is sort of weak by itself. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to have one actor be the main attraction in your film, but if your film wouldn’t be able to stand on its own without them, that’s when it’s an issue. To be fair the actors aren’t terrible, but acting right along side Joan Crawford, makes them look worse, just because she’s so good.
Eva as a character was written very well in my opinion. She fully embodies the narcissistic manipulating villain, and I think the writers did a great job with manipulating the audience too. There were times where you felt sorry for Eva, but then you realize her breaking down was just another attempt at gaining sympathy to weaponize, which I thought was brilliant. Her character was very captivating, she was one those villains that you hated but were low key rooting for.
Overall, I didn’t absolutely hate this film, but I didn’t enjoy it either. It just kind of fell flat in most aspects. It felt like I was watching a bad episode of Dynasty.
