Is it weird that the Emanuelle film that, so far, is the most racially insensitive is the one that has given me a much more invested interest in the rest of the film series? Joe D’Amato’s sensibilities around the exploitation clearly make him more suited to horror even if the sex in Last Cannibals is focused more on the sensual rather than the outright pornographic. I believe that this decision is what makes the gore more effective, really being a standout star in this film, where the simplistic story does ground the film more easily compared to previous works of D’Amato’s within this film series. The decisions to portray sex as sensual and erotic rather than pornographic and horrific as in prior instalments reframe the human body as more self-sacred in a sense, allowing for the mutilation of such to feel more visceral.
