I like to think myself as a hopeful being despite what others may read into as being a natural pessimism from me. The Creeping Garden’s examination of slime moulds, an often overlooked organism class, links their behavior and patterns to our own human networks. As a result, what starts off with a premise that sounds like a more horrific and terrifying look at the organisms turns into a more philosophical deep dive into the nature of humanity, communication, and the nature of community. Throughout the film we are also given the histories of certain kinds of film, the details of road networks, a look at computing, all of which are very interesting and are a neat way of examining slime moulds and how they relate to our own experience. However, the unsettling presentation of electronic bweeps and bwoops as a soundtrack along with certain cg animations used throughout the film undercuts any sort of hope and awe, treating slime moulds as an oddity rather than a curiosity, and yes, there is a difference.
