Fell asleep in the last twenty minutes, went to see zone of interest and then came home and finished this up. It wasn’t intentional at all but made for a very bleak but interesting viewing experience. Interesting because this was made not long after WW2 while ZOI has much more time for the collective consciousness to ruminate on the horrific events it’s depicting. I’ll admit I don’t know that much about that particular time in history beyond what they teach you in high school but was very intrigued by the way both movies center around the holocaust without actually showing anything. In the case of telegraph hill, I’m sure Hayes code had a lot to do with that. Also, it felt much more like a catalyst for the plot than a statement about anything besides Germans = bad villains, Americans = good saviors. I also looked up this actress and found out she was Italian and not polish at all. This is such a Hollywood move but I wonder how they went about casting for this movie.
How much did people know at the time this was being filmed? I actually don’t know. I probably wouldn’t have even made these conclusions or connections had I not accidentally watched two very different films dealing with the same subject matter almost in tandem. But it is something im thinking about now.
