A horror comedy blaxploitation about a racist man and a black man sharing a body??? Oh this will definitely be a blast!
Except it wasn't.
I thought this was going to be special, but 20 minutes in and I was already worn out. Everyone's performance and the tone is just so dry - and by "dry" I mean there's no flavour or excitement to anyone's acting and voice, even when there's a gorilla running around. It just feels like the actors are there for the money. The first 20 minutes is also filled with a lot of unnecessary dialogue that don't stimulate any excitement in me. But nevertheless, I decided to keep watching.
About 30 minutes or so into the movie, the "thing", which is just a man, finally gets an extra head. And you're probably thinking the film gets more engaging from here. No it doesn't. It's the same stale line delivery. All throughout the rest of its runtime, my misery began to increase. I kept on thinking of the statement that says something along the lines of "if the first 20 minutes of a movie aren't engaging then turn the movie off", and multiple times I wish I did. I spent the rest of the film thinking about what it could have been instead of what it actually was. And by the time the credits rolled, well, I guess you could say I was browned off.
The film isn't tense enough for me to take it seriously and it's nowhere near funny enough to enter into the "so bad it's good" category. Maybe the film has some thematic weight to make up for it? No. In the first 20 minutes, the film sets itself up to be a commentary on racism with the scene where the main character attempts to fire one of the black characters (notice I say "character" because everyone in this was forgettable), but that commentary is quickly pushed to the side as the film goes on and attempts to be funny.
I wouldn't be surprised if this film was one of those exploitation films where the title, poster art and trailer were made first before writing an actual story because that's what it looks like. The title and poster art make you think you're about to watch a really funny slapstick comedy and then you just get a whole lot of nothing. This is one of those films that need a remake because its concept is so good.
I believe my rating is too high but I can't give it lesser because I know, or I hope, that the creators worked really hard to make this, I just wish that was evident in the material.
