I need to learn to trust letterboxd reviews when a movie is shit... but the synopsis for it just seemed so interesting to me, felt perfect for hispanic heritage month. Aside from the owl house I dont know any sapphic dominican representation so I was very excited for this thinking it was gonna be hacks dominican version 😭 I was so wrong it was not a love story.....
That in itself would have been fine if it had been marketed differently plus if it was explored in any interesting way but it was not. Did the woman actually love her, was she an escape for her or did she just fetishize her being young and dominican? I don't know because again its not explored well. The dominican lady didnt feel like she was a character really, she felt more like a vessel for the story. Who was she aside from a person who uses rich people? Why do they all love her? Her entire character and relationships did not make sense to me.
Another pet peeve of mine, while they portrayed dominican life pretty realistically (the colmados and working for toursists) I was pissed off that aside from a few instances, they were in LAS TERRENAS and didnt use its beauty to its full potential. This might be harsh but they kinda made it look dull to me and las terrenas is everything but dull.
I'm probably extra harsh on this movie because I'm dominican lol but I just care </3 Theres barely any dominican rep as is let alone queer rep so I really wanted to like this. Sigh
