This is alright for an independent film. I don’t know that I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read the book prior to watching the film. It is just a visual version of the book in my opinion. It could have used an extra 20 minutes of run time and the characters are a lot more dull in this depiction than the novel. The acting was a bit of a weak point in my opinion. The accents were very forced and a lot of the scenes weren’t all that convincing for me. However the story is still good and a lot of the themes are still in tact. I wish the budget was a little larger so they could really have captured the beauty of the Appalachian area they filmed at. Cinematography was definitely lacking in that area. As with most book to film adaptations, there was a ton of potential in the story and the sheer difficulty of making a good novel a good film seems to have won this time.
