This had a hell of a lot going for it. It’s found footage, b&w analogue Sci-Fi with music by Neil Hannon and yet although I did like it, I felt that it was slightly underwhelming and could have been far more.
I love the premise, it’s very clever and the film itself in the end was also very clever yet that wasn’t enough for me. They could have done so much more with it but I feel like they played it safe.
All that being said though, wow. Just wow. It’s utterly gorgeous, the black and white super 16 format works wonders here. Every frame is stunning and it makes the viewing experience very fun.
There’s also music by Neil Hannon who I am a massive fan of. His music really elevates the film and his in universe songs add a lot.
I also have to mention the effects. They’re so subtle but so incredibly powerful. The compositing of historical footage to make the anachronistic newsreels is genuinely so brilliant and impressive.
Lola could have been a masterpiece but sadly it falls ever so short of that category but that’s not to say it’s bad. It’s very good but unfortunately it’s not the masterpiece I wanted it to be.
