Tokuzō Tanaka proves yet again that he is entirely unequipped to make a movie covering violence towards women. I thought 1968's 'The Snow Woman' handled it okay, but with 'The Whale God' and now this, I have to believe that was a fluke.
Additionally, this probably has one of the messiest openings to a movie I have seen; and while Bizennosuke's arc has the potentional to be fairly interesting, it is framed so poorly that I can only muster a little strength to lament the fact that we never really get any satisfying depth.
Visually, this movie is pretty appealing. Everything looks nice and the practical effects are fun. There are better films out there if you want that kind of thing, though.
