An interesting take on the great detective to say the least, with the focus here on Holmes kicking his cocaine habit with the help of Sigmund Freud. Despite finding a bit of the main bulk of the movie a little meandering and the mystery a bit unfocused to me anyway, there's a lot to enjoy. First off, the cast for this is insane, though somehow the story manages to underuse the fact that they got Laurence Freaking Olivier to play Professor Freaking Moriarty. Williamson is a pretty great Holmes, setting himself apart from what came before and inspiring Holmeses to come with his manic approach. Duvall as Watson is an interesting choice mainly because I don't know if I've ever heard Duvall speak with a British accent before, and I mentally cannot juxtapose those two things together. I don't necessarily know how I feel at the moment on the ideas it posits on Holmes' backstory and purposeful messing with canon, but it's certainly unique, so I'll give it that. A revisit may do this one good.
Also I see you, Stephen Sondheim-written song randomly thrown in, I see you.
