Every franchise that I love has that one product that I fucking hate with all my heart. Star Wars has The Rise of Skywalker, Spider-Man has Far From Home, Batman has Batman v Superman, Sonic has Sonic Forces, and Dragon Ball has Resurrection F.
I think this movie doesn’t work at all. It just doesn’t do anything particularly right. First, you have the more minor complaints like power scaling. Are you deadass telling me that a random Frieza goon could beat the shit out of Piccolo when he was pretty much above SSJ level? And is Gohan really that fucking weak? This is more of a complaint about his character, and that’s a problem that plagued Gohan in DBS, but it started here. He couldn’t even turn into SSJ2. It is kinda cool seeing Roshi and Tien get some screen time though, so I’ll give it that.
Now, my biggest problems start when Goku and Vegeta show up and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan is introduced. Seriously, how the fuck did Toriyama think that was a good name? Thank God it was later changed to Super Saiyan Blue. First of all, you completely shit on Super Saiyan God. We didn’t even get an appearance of such an important form in this new Dragon Ball era. Second, its appearance isn’t foreshadowed in any way. It just comes out of nowhere. I know it’s a movie and you don’t have enough time to fully develop a transformation, but at least try to build it up. Super Saiyan God worked for me because the way of achieving it was different and it made an impact on Goku’s character. That’s not the case with SSGSS.
And I don’t even like the design that much. I think the shade of blue is kinda ugly, and the animation style doesn’t help. The whole movie looks lifeless to me. Battle of Gods looked way better. I just don’t like Yamamuro’s style, and that’s one of the reasons why I haven’t watched the first three arcs of Super. I’ve just read the manga, even though it’s not much better.
Now, I also have a lot of problems with Golden Frieza. I think the fact that he’s more powerful than SSGSS completely ruins the concept of god ki, which was actually really interesting because for Goku to achieve that, he couldn’t just do it through normal training. But this mf Frieza trains for four months and is suddenly able to not only reach his level but briefly surpass it? That basically killed the god ki concept immediately after it was introduced. And for me it has remained a total shit show, because in later arcs we see other characters reach that level by just training a bit, like Broly or Gohan.
Finally, the ending. Holy shit, the fucking ending. You know what? I could’ve forgiven everything I just complained about if they had let Vegeta finally land the final blow on Frieza. It would’ve been a perfect moment for his character and he definitely deserved it. But no. Fuck Vegeta, right? Let’s just have Goku save the day again. But my biggest problem isn’t even that Goku wins. My problem is that it happens for absolutely no reason. It doesn’t contribute to anything. It has zero purpose other than stealing the victory from Vegeta, and that was the nail in the coffin for this movie.
This is definitely my least favorite Dragon Ball movie. I just hope that in a future remake or retelling of this arc they actually improve the story, because it has a lot of potential. I would genuinely love to see a good version of this concept. But if I’m being honest, I don’t think that’s going to happen
