This was actually really good and honestly impressed me a lot. It started a bit mundane, I thought this might me another snooze fest but honestly I was surprised at how good it was. Bar the songs, the film never loses that momentum. The film is very interesting as it begins with a mysterious figure who becomes a beacon of hope for the miners, that is Vijay. He has a dark past, in which we find out that he had cowardly abandoned his ship in a crisis, now he is disgraced and works in the mine, helping people and standing for their rights. Overall, the story follows his redemption from this past and we definitely see it in the final moments of the film, as he is ready to sacrifice his life for the miners even if it means the worst fate for him, death. The film also depicts the class differences, the miners are poor and dressed poorly, compared to this the main villain, Dhanraj, is a corrupt businessman who will do anything for a profit even if it means putting his workers in danger. The film exposes the greed that is rampant not only in Indian society but the globe at large if you think about it. Dhanraj doesn't see the miners as human beings but as just numbers in a way doing his work so he can receive the highest of profits. And it highlights such a level of greed and consumption by the rich.
Anyways, this film was shot perfectly by Kay Gee. Admittedly, I feel like the soundtrack was not really giving. Lowkey feel like this was one of those films that don't need a soundtrack but oh well. Yash Chopra gave a wonderful direction for this film and honestly hats off to him because some of those sequences especially the final one in the mine during the flooding like that looks so impressive and I wonder how they did it considering it was purely practical effects and no cgi. Shatrugan Sinha gave a great performance. Neetu Singh was okay, nothing special to be honest. Even same for Parveen Babi who was barely in this film. Rakhee did actually give a very understated performance, I actually am interested in her work. Shashi Kapoor is a nice touch to the cast honestly. But am I surprised it is the Amitabh Bachchan who walks away with this film. No I am not. He is so impressive yet again and so emotionally expressive as well as explosive being a perfect balance. Definitely one of his best performances. Also one of the best Yash Chopra films too!
