I recently watched this documentary as part of my office movie club. It documents Colin Beavan and his family’s attempt to have zero impact on the environment for an entire year (sort of - he does it in “phases”). I gotta say, this film is much more entertaining than I thought it would be. It also shines the light on how difficult this sort of lifestyle would be in today’s high consuming culture. And while his choice to get rid of all of the consumption rather than pick and choose certain aspects was interesting, it was highly impractical. His intentions were constantly put into question throughout the film. However, I think in the end his project had quite a bit of impact - if not on others, on his own family. They were able to use the things they’ve learned about how they live and make changes for the better. My only qualm throughout the documentary was that Colin Beaven was kind of a jerk. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend this film for those environmentally-conscious readers out there - and those who want to be more so.
