Firstly, whoever was in charge of the subtitles did a terrible fucking job. The creator of the Rock-afire Explosion is named Aaron Fechter and one time the subtitles call him "air infector". There is also a moment where some says the animatronics are "still in boxes" and the subtitles are "stolen boxes". A lot of these dudes have southern accents, sure, but no one should have any trouble understanding them. As far as the documentary itself goes, it can't decide whether it wants to be a documentary about the rise and fall of the Rock-afire Explosion or about its ridiculously obsessed fans and ends up half-assing both. Either plot thread would have been interesting, but the jumping back and forth ruins the momentum and a 70 minute feature isn't enough to do both justice (especially when we sidetrack to talk about these people's life outside the scope of the story. I loved the segment about how this guy only drinks Mountain Dew and refuses to drink anything else, even water, but what did that really add to anything?). It's still a fun doc, but I think it needed to be more fleshed out. Some of the best stuff happens during the credits, like when Chris, the main guy in the doc, is 31 when they filmed this. Bro, I thought for sure he was late 60's. I'm 33 and the guy is younger than me; he must have lived a rough life. Glad to see he got to follow his passion and collect a bunch of creepy animatronics, but that was a huge twist.
