This remake of The Boxer From Shangtung is a lot more pulpier but throws in a lot of elements not present in the original in order to appeal to the more modern Hong Kong cinema landscape that flocks to comedies and romances. It’s not an entirely unwelcome change of pace, but it is definitely a change of pace that does make the film feel a lot busier than it actually is. The action setpieces are a lot more interesting to look at compared to the original film as well, focusing on a lot of close-up action in a neat and exciting way. The occasional dip into a more epic look with large crowd scenes are a nice touch too, even if they’re too far and few in between.
