Pocahontas is a conflicting film. On one end the writing is atrocious and the original history is completely disrespected. This film also just had a terrible impact on how people view Native Americans and their culture. However I believe that there are good morals hidden behind this movie despite how it can be interpreted based on upbringing and political ignorance.
Some people decided to take this film and use it to cause hatred and violence. However on the other end, back when I watched it as a child, what I got from it was empathy, understanding of differences, sensitivity towards the environment and critical skepticism.
Songs like colours of the wind are so incredibly relevant today with the current political climate. I believe that we can take the morals from this movie despite its flaws whilst also seeing those flaws and learning the true history.
The most important thing is listening to indigenous voices and understanding the mistakes of this film. This is their story and their history.
