What a weird one. Currently being the 10th highest grossing movie in China, Monster Hunt tells a story set in ancient China, but with monsters.
It is pretty silly and over-the-top.
For me, who has not seen many Chinese films, Monster Hunt needs getting used to. The pacing is weird, the narrative structure feels unusual and the CGI looks a bit rubbery. The movie had its lengths in between and after an hour I was about to quit because it was all too silly for me. The last twenty minutes, however, I found even good and funny, although they were silly.
Still, I don't quite know how I feel about Monster Hunt. Weird is all I can say about it. Weird, not bad, not good, just fucking weird.
