Ma movie night round #1(I can NOT ethical post this without fist putting out a Content warning for r*pe) I feel as if, some films struggle with being enthralling. In the case of Ma 2015 that is further from the truth. Ma 2015 mange’s to keep you constantly in the story, I personally felt as the second I looked away I was gonna miss either a beautiful shot or a crucial part of the film. Every scene is shot beautiful and encapsulated. For a completely silent film is bigger feat to watch and being immersive in, this is not a film you just throw on to have in the background, every single shot will keep you wanting more and more.
This films details a modern version of Mother Mary from the Bible’s pilgrimage for her destiny. In this retelling it’s in the southwest of the unites states. Most of its story feeling more like a dance then a film.
With Rowlson-Halls dance background seeing this phenomenal choreographer in the film 10 times better. Everything in this film feels intentional every scene, every shot, every movement, every slight move of the camera. It almost feeling as if you watching a painting ever so slightly come to life.
Seeing as this was Dir. Celia Rowlson-Halls first feature length film it honestly makes me excited to see what she has in store for us. I plan to watch her most recent film Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia (2020).
