Comically juvenile, even down to the narrative logic. At some point I think they let the 11-year old co-stars take over the writing of the movie. The seriousness is on the level of Honey I Shrunk the Kids. And yet it does make some grim choices, including my favourite surrounding the UN and their debate about sacrificing two 11-year old boyscouts to aliens.
While the Gamera creaturework can sometimes initially feel lacking, there persists a beautiful penchant for graphically visual fights between monsters, like ooey gooey bloodwounds. The climactic fight goes shockingly hard with a violent culmination of kaiju carnage glory. Viras is a beautiful example of underground kaiju representation, unpolished and lofi.
This doesn’t come with a recommendation, but still heavy on the charm factor.
