It’s cute.
I mean, the film is honestly pretty forgettable; I’m not gonna lie. It doesn’t stand out much in terms of cinematography, pacing, or direction. From a strictly technical standpoint, there are quite a few moments where it feels flat and underwhelming. It plays it very safe, stylistically speaking.
But despite all that, the heart of the story really does matter. It’s a powerful narrative rooted in real history, and the emotional weight of it, what it says about love, race, colonialism, and resilience, still carries through well, even if the execution doesn’t always do it justice. And honestly, the performances make up for a lot. David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike did a great job. (Unrelated, but why does some shit always happen to whoever is playing Rosamund's husband? Fuck me.)
It’s not a film I’ll rewatch, but I’m glad it's there.
