56th Miike

This is really really really solid. Reminds me an awful lot of Ley Lines they just have very similar vibes to them. I’ve been wanting to watch this one for ages and I’m glad I finally did it’s pretty damn good.

Very very well made and honestly it’s a story that could work for anybody I think. Pre-2007 Miike movies just have such a feeling and vibe to them that the new ones just don’t have. I still like a lot of new Miike stuff but his old stuff was definitely when he was at his best.

I really like this movie, all the characters feel very humane, not overtly cartoonish and I really enjoyed their individual stories and motives. As the audience, I watched the whole things happened with different characters separately and it gave me the feeling of inevitability. Just like the ending, I knew where it’s going but I still hoped, and I thought my hope was answered when I saw chuji with his hamonica belt, then the director gave his last kiss goodbye muah.

my poor Kenji being alone at the end was too cruel 🥲

Had a weird amount going for it 
First Miike I’m not anticipating much more like this from him 
Very Kitano esc in the best way all the bits I loved most took me heavily to a Kids Return/ Sonatine influence 
In my humble squishy opinion the ending was like a last minute flop 
Like we saw the best ending it was there and then just didn’t actually happen fully 
It was also at its best when things were at there least explicit 
Like gunfights where the camera lingered anywhere but the shooter or shot just so easy to do but the sound was so good it felt so much more impressive
Plot had an interesting rhythm 
Idk nothing crazy outstanding
Honestly it’s the music that’s bumping this up for me
Otherwise it’s very good-average 
But dam 
This thing played out like a musical 
So often when films spend ages with a band on stage it gets old FAST
But this just had it down 
And the music slapped
Diegetic or not it slapped 
And that did a lot of heavy lifting for the vibe 
And also feels special to me bc that seems really rare at this point 
Sort of barely anything else to say
