I really liked the film and the lead character but she goes from reluctant rookie to bad-ass supercop in no time at all.
There wasn't much explanation other than they were forced to pick her. Her training in academy was only briefly touched upon and she wasn't shown as being an exemplary student.
They touched upon her friends and her mother, but this seemed to just be filler material and irrelevant.
It was pretty cliched in points but that was the basis of the film with a woman in a tough male dominated environment.
I got a bit of a Sicario vibe from it, butthat was more to do with it being 'fish out of water' story.
