Not sure what was going on when I last watched this but, Paul Muni’s performance is pretty good, planning a character that does a lot and goes through a lot and reflects his variety of emotions, Louise Rainer on the other hand has one facial expression and a character that is pretty void of anything, with only the slightest bits showing in what should be much more emotional, not sure how she won an award for this movie.
On top of that the yellow face and use of white people for pretty much all the adult roles is obviously a tarnish on this film, but one it could over take a little I suspect if the characters were more interesting and this movie was both shot and edited better, and with regards to editing specifically a lot better, cause this is very shitty from start to finish. Scenes just end, questions left unanswered, time jobs leaving character development empty.
