Did the stars align in 1969 ?? Did I just watch that happen ?!
Seriously stupid levels of talent in here just brimming all over the place
Genuinely has the ripest chanbara experts plucked from the real world and swirled around here for a couple hours
Otherwise the film is just awesome too
It looks so good it moves to well
I actually felt for these characters
When names were mentioned I knew the names I knew what everyone wanted
I felt sad I felt happy I was nervous for them
I’m pretty shocked how advanced this felt I was not expecting this at all
And it managed the run time so so well
But seriously I need to waffle about what on earth went on behind the scenes here
Bc how did this happen
Have things crossed over this well before or since ?!
Gna risk sounding stupid here the words feel harder to get out i think
Gosha in my eyes is only really paralleled by Misumi when it comes to these genre flicks
Obviously Kurosawa and Kobayashai etc etc have made a handful of incredible samurai pieces, but those cater more to being truthful, long-standing, faithful cinema yk
Not to put the genre-appealing films and such down (they’re ltr my favourite thing), but the fact is they were on a whole different level to these actual masterpieces
They just were
But that said, no-one else knew this corner of film better than they did by the ends of there careers
Not like they do it man
And I don’t really love a lot of either of there work
Certainly nowhere near as much as the aforementioned masterpieces
But they got it
They just had it
And here you got Gosha, without debate on of the best to do it, in his prime
So the directors cracked okay what else
Hashimoto Shinobu writes the dam thing
Same dude who churned out Harakiri, Seven Samurai and Rashomon AND Revenge to name a few
Seriously the dream team
Okay well dude who the hell is performing here ?!
Oh okay well the goat first off
First off basically the goat is
Nakadai giving probably one of my favourite performances
Then Katsu actually carrying the weight of the story on his shoulders
Stars off which these Mifune impression gone to strange new extremes
A toddler-grandfather dynamic between him and Nakadai to really capitalise on the actors’ potentials
Then throw in Mishima for good measure
Throw in that guy
Just throw him in AND predict his death like actual death a year before it happened
Like uncomfortably close to when it happened
What ??
We need it to look good right ? Okay get Rashomon’s cinematographer in there bc fuck it
He’s changed the way things look on film forever okay let’s let him on board
Maybe a tad over exaggerating but I think I’ve made my point dude
It just felt so strange to watch
In an amazing way
But what the hell
I’m so blown away
By no means was it all the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen but at no point was it anywhere near anything remotely resembling bad
Which is crazy
Especially for Gosha I’m ngl
Maybe my fav bit of Nakadai and Katsu acting in a little 40 second scene
So so so good
Idk if I’ve way overegged this in all senses but I’m feeling hyped rn that this was as good as it was
Just super pleased
If you’ve enjoyed any samurai movie ever outside of the big pieces, this is a must I think
