Imagine Gilderoy Lockhart getting exposed across the entire wizarding world as a total fraud. Everyone knows that all of his stories were stolen and that he's a huge piece of shit. Now imagine that Amazon made a documentary about him, where he tells us that he's actually the victim here and it doesn't matter that all his memoirs are total bullshit. In fact, they aren't total bullshit because the people that actually lived the lives chronicled in his memoirs are a part of him, so he wasnt actually lying; he did do those things because he is also those people. The Amazon documentary features interviews exclusively with Lockhart and we never get to hear any side other than his. The documentary is presented as Lockhart being completely validated and innocent. This is that documentary, but in real life. It's layer upon layer of bullshit and at no point does Laura Albert apologize or offer a real explanation, in fact the only things she does is double down and dig deeper. This documentary is so frustrating; it legitimately pissed me off. She works really hard to convince us that she is the victim here and not a total narcissist and psychopath. This doc is working really hard on her behalf and she does nothing to help. I don't want to spoil any of the ludicrous turns the story takes, but getting this outrageous story told exclusively through the lense of this wholy unlikable, compulsive liar makes for a terrible documentary. Spending the entire time listening to obvious lies while the doc portrays them as truths is infuriating. Plus, when she pretends to be JT on the phone, she uses a terrible southern accent that she doesn't use otherwise and that the person she uses to be JT at readings and appearances also don't have that accent makes everyone here look really fucking stupid. You are telling me that JT had an editor and a publicist that have heard the terrible accent voice on the phone and then seen "JT" in person and heard them talk in a totally different voice and definitely not look like a teenager or a boy makes me question my own sanity. To be fair though, Laura also seems to think that JT is a real person, as she blames most of her hoax on him. She tells us that JT said this or JT drove there. She acts like JT is a fully functioning person who she has no control over and then also tells us that he's not a personality in her crazy mind. JT is her scapegoat when any eyes may turn her way. When they give us excerpts from JT's poems or novels, what they give is is pretty awful and is obviously only accepted because readers thought it was written by a drugged addicted prostitute with AIDS and a tenth grade education, not a woman in her thirties that wasnt getting enough attention. I think this doc might be my new Litmus Test; if you come out of this Team Laura, then we are absolutely not going to get along. If you sympathize with the asshole fraudster and recognize her as the victim of the story, then stay away from me. It's not even a well made doc: the constant nonsensical time changes, the lack of any authoritative voice, the bad score, the refusal to look at anything critically, the barrage of new characters that don't get enough play to even be included, and the total failure as a real documentary. Isn't a doc supposed to explore a topic. This feels more like propaganda. There is no attempt to make this unbiased. There are exactly zero interviews from people critical of or who were made to look like total fucking morons by Laura. There is only one interview that isn't from Laura and it's with her sister-in-law who played JT in public and that interview accomplishes nothing. There is no transparency and no honesty. I fullheartedly recommend skipping this shit.
